The University of Wisconsin’s UW-Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserves is on the south shore of Lake Mendota and is a Class IV habitat conservation area. It is the largest freshwater natural Preserve in the United States, extending from Wisconsin’s southern border up the extinct Wisconsin River’s northern slope. This beautiful area was once a thickly wooded forest gives access to the campus housing and athletic facilities. As a result, many types of plant and animal life have been stripped entirely from the land. But still, the preserve offers impressive scenery, with more than two miles of beaches, nearly three hundred species of birds, and over one hundred species of mammals in the lake and surrounding area.
